Getting Your First Donation – Family and Friends

When you’re just starting out and getting your nonprofit off the ground, the best source to get your first donations is from family and friends. One of the best ways is to use your nonprofits Facebook and create a fundraiser (make sure you have been verified and set-up a bank account). When creating this fundraiser make sure to have family and friends donate (which will motivate others to donate) and to share it with their friends (who will support them in what they are doing as well). This is not only a great PR opportunity to spread your name, but to get future donors as well! Also, Facebook will send them a receipt of their donation for write-off purposes, so you don’t have to worry about it.

Businesses – Using Your Resources

One of the largest forms of donations you will get is from businesses. As much as you may love your cause, businesses need a bit more incentive to donate. However, if you have a full-time job at a current company or have good relationships with past companies your worked for or just in general, create a sponsorship package and reach out to them. Let them know what they will get by donating to you. A few examples are: newsletters, social media, website, etc. Though you may not be a for-profit business, you still need to be business like and think like a business.

Google Ad Grants

One of the amazing things that Google does is give $10,000 a month to nonprofits to promote their services. Google is one of the most powerful and used search engines. With the proper ad set-up, it can be a powerful source for donations, PR, and helping others. However, they do have a number of requirements, so be sure to check them out and see their requirements to make sure you meet them.

Amazon Smile

Perhaps something you didn’t know is that Amazon has a program setup to help nonprofits called Amazon Smile. How it works is simple, you must be on the Amazon Smile webpage or have it setup on your phone in the app, then the user can choose a verified nonprofit to support. At that point, any purchase that a user makes that is Amazon Smile approved, Amazon will donate .5% of that purchase to the charity selected. That may seem like a small amount, but the more individuals you get to support you, along with all the purchases those individuals make the amount can add up quickly. This a great source of passive income, it can help with overhead, social media advertising, and other areas!
