IRS Recognition & Compliance

Our nonprofit changed its name. How do we notify the IRS?

If your nonprofit changes its name, update all records to keep your tax-exempt status accurate:

  1. Amend State Records: File an amendment to your Articles of Incorporation with your Secretary of State.
  2. Notify the IRS: Report the name change on your next Form 990 or send a letter with your old and new names and EIN.
  3. Update Other Agencies: Notify state charity offices, grantors, and local authorities.
  4. Revise Materials: Update your website, social media, marketing materials, and financial accounts.
  5. Inform Stakeholders: Announce the change to donors and partners.

Keep a record of all updates to ensure a smooth transition.
