Understanding Nonprofits

What’s the difference between a nonprofit and a 501(c)(3)?

“Nonprofit” refers to a state-registered entity type, while “501(c)(3)” refers to a federal tax-exempt status granted by the IRS. You must first form a nonprofit corporation with your state before applying to the IRS for 501(c)(3) recognition.
