What is the difference between 501(c)(3) charitable status and other 501(c) categories?

Section 501(c)(3) covers charitable, religious, educational, and similar organizations whose donors receive tax deductions. Other categories, such as 501(c)(4) social welfare groups or 501(c)(6) trade associations, have different permitted activities and donor-deduction rules.
